Photography produced by photographers from and residing in sub-Saharan Africa has been poorly represented in general histories of photography. With few exceptions, research in this field has been late in coming, as has the visibility of these photographic productions in exhibitions organised in galleries, museums and cultural organisations. For this reason, this book aims to provide a synoptic overview of the history of African photography from the invention of the daguerreotype in 1839 to the present day. Furthermore, the publication aims to question some classical theoretical positions that have contributed to constructing and perpetuating an erroneous image of the history of photography on the African continent in order to ask: should photography be understood as a phenomenon within a cosmopolitan and global context? Is it relevant to see it not only as a technology patented in Europe and adopted by practitioners in Africa, but also as a social practice developed by people whose results circulated as knowledge in the Atlantic and Indian triangle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
