An exhibition is a collection of objects brought together in a specific physical space. Visitors encounter forms and artifacts that share the same spatial and temporal framework. This allows the viewer to walk through the space and trace their own paths, engaging in a direct, though mediated, encounter between their body and the objects. An exhibition is also a device that allows for developments and overflows beyond the given framework. Alongside the exhibition is the essay. A polysemic term, it refers on one hand to a text—a literary work of reflective or discursive nature—and on the other, to a test or experimental process. The title The Papers of the Exhibition (1977-2017) thus refers to two meanings of the same object: the exhibition as a site for the production of thought and as a testing ground. The curatorial symposium of the same name took place through five sessions held between 2016 and 2023 at Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao. Its aim was to study exhibitions spanning a forty-year period, and it brought together over thirty readings of as many exhibitions from recent history, offering various perspectives on the exhibition: as a cultural object that reflects and responds to the historical conditions in which it is produced; as an institutional form that legitimizes the representations it hosts; and as an ephemeral device capable of generating interruptions and fostering moments of attention…
