This collection of T-shirts designed by artist Sahatsa Jauregi stems from a series of drawings she made in 2021, which took inspiration from silhouettes captured from photographs the artist took with her friends. Immersed in a process of transition from photography to sculpture and the visual arts, which she reflected in her solo exhibition Los brutos (Artiatx, Bilbao, 2021), Jauregi was inspired by her personal collection of mimes to explore a ‘gentle’ counterpoint to her sculptural practice. Interested in the ‘mime’ with which the faces of these porcelain figures are made and drawn, the artist sought to experiment with the tensions she found between these gentle images and their production in steel and hard techniques. From this opposition to her sculpture, Jauregi found in the act of collecting the porcelains an end rather than a means to explore in her work. An accumulation of apparently cheerful images that he nevertheless finds sinister and disconcerting. A search on the thresholds of the beautiful and the sombre, the soft and pleasant and the hard and metallic.

Sahatsa Jauregi is an artist born in Itaparika, Brazil, who lives and works in Bilbao. She approaches sculpture from a popular perspective and her concerns operate within the triangular framework delimited by people, things and spaces. She was a member of the independent space Okela from 2017-2022 and has been awarded various prizes, including the Gure Artea Prize 2019 and the Arco Comunidad de Madrid Prize 2023. She has recently had solo exhibitions at Galería The Ryder (Madrid, 2024), Sagrada Mercancía (Santiago de Chile, 2023), Spirit Vessel (Girona, 2023), Artium (Gasteiz, 2023), Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao, 2022), Aparador Monteleón (Madrid, 2022), Artiatx (Bilbao, 2021) and Halfhouse, (Barcelona, 2019). This past year, he has also participated in the following group exhibitions: Turno de réplica, cuestión de piel (Patio Herreriano, 2024) and Larruak eta izurrak (Tabakalera, 2024).
