As its author writes:
“The joint vision of an American postcard of the Gateway Arch of Saint Louis (Missouri) together with a Spanish one of the access arch to Torreblanca del Sol, in Fuengirola, opened a path (a highway) for me with no return, and here is shown a part. It is evident how with the adoption of the American image one does not suppress one’s own image, but adds to it in a pastiche-construction that reaffirms its shabbyness, in a constant tension between the cosmopolitan and the national. The Spanish ‘changed’, but they also remained the same. “Spain was modern, but—this adversative conjunction is indispensable—Spanish.”
