It is evident how with the adoption of the American image one does not suppress one’s own image, but adds to it in a pastiche-construction that reaffirms its shabbyness, in a constant tension between the cosmopolitan and the national. The Spanish ‘changed’, but they also remained the same. “Spain was modern, but—this adversative conjunction is indispensable—Spanish.”
